ulture shock is a term used to describe the process a person experiences when living outside his or her culture for a long period of time. Culture shock is a reality to many international students. When moving to a new culture, international students must deal with a language that may be unfamiliar, incomprehensible customs and values, and cultural expectations the students may not be fully aware of. As a result, the students may go through emotional extremes ranging from excitement with the new culture to depression. I, like most foreign students, had to face the harsh reality of culture shock as I pursued my college career. But it wasn't an easy process. There's no magic pill or vaccine. To be successful, international students should become familiar with the process of culture shock, a process that became my way of feeling at ease with French culture. j
